Mission Coach Technique Beyond Belief This process takes a new look at the role of values and beliefs. We explore the possibility that positive beliefs at best allow us to take action in pursuit of our desires and positive beliefs in themselves are not the motivation for taking action. This theory proposes it is our need to experience the values served by the desire that is the real motivation for taking action. Strange Attractors When we facilitate change within ourselves and other people we focus much of our attention on changing beliefs. Beliefs, both positive and negative, have an emotional energy and become powerful attractors for our attention.
Values do not have the same emotional energy and do not draw our attention in the same way. The violation of a value does have emotional energy because what we decide is a violation is based on a belief. The desire to experience a value also has emotional energy, sometimes called passion. It is this desire to experience a value that we focus on in the Beyond Belief process. The Best Belief is No Belief! What do the expressions 'negative belief' and 'positive belief' really mean? - A positive belief is supportive of a desired outcome
- A negative belief is unsupportive of a desired outcome
- A belief is only negative or positive with respect to a desired outcome
- A belief in itself is neither negative or positive. A belief is just a way of thinking
When we facilitate change we attempt to increase the emotional energy on positive beliefs and decrease the emotional energy on negative beliefs. But what would it be like to have no beliefs, negative or positive about your desire? Does a healthy 12 month old infant think to herself "I must do it this time - but what will they think of me if I fall again?" as she is picked up off the floor yet again while attempting to take her first steps? A child of this age is unlikely to have the linguistic ability to vocalise these thoughts (beliefs) and even if she could, such thoughts would not cross her mind! Why? She doesn't know enough to know she can't. She doesn't know enough to know she can. She just has the desire to walk. In this state of desiring and not knowing she is open to taking action from which she forms the knowing she can walk based on her own experience. Our beliefs about an outcome formed before we have experienced the outcome cannot be beliefs based on our own experience of that outcome. Therefore these beliefs, positive or negative either belong to someone else or have been formed by us generalising beliefs from a similar experience. As "sophisticated" adults how do we operate? Here's an example: how many people do you know aged teenager or above who have learnt to fluently speak a foreign language? As adults we have all kinds of hang-ups (beliefs) about our ability to pronounce the vocabulary or remember if the verb is masculine or feminine. Then we justify giving up by telling ourselves most people speak English so why bother! And as for trying to speak a foreign language in public - we would rather die! Could our 12 month old learn to speak a foreign language? Every language she hears is a foreign language! Try getting this kid to stop talking a foreign language in public! She has no beliefs about her ability to speak any number of languages and no hang-ups about why she shouldn't or should, she just knows she wants to. What would it be like for you to "suspend" your beliefs about your desires until you have experienced the fulfilment of those desires? Then based on your own experience you have the opportunity to form a knowing just as you did as a child when you discovered you could walk. Using NLP you can create the perfect opportunity and environment for you to have this experience. First we need to define a role for beliefs and values. Braking Beliefs Let's use the analogy of a car to look at a role for beliefs: - Having a negative belief about your desire is like driving a car with the brakes on
- Having a positive belief about your desire is like driving a car with the brakes off
The braking system does not positively contribute to the forward motion of the car. Taking your foot off the brake pedal (positive belief) will not make the car go forward. No matter how positive the belief is, at best it will allow the car to move forward with minimum resistance. Many of us spend time and energy consciously and unconsciously oscillating back and forth between positive and negative beliefs about our desires. This is like pumping the brake pedal. At best we are in for a jerky ride, at worst the engine will stall and we will come to a complete stop! Staying with the car analogy, let's look at the role of values: - A value is the engine. This engine has the potential to generate tremendous power
- Taking action to experience the value is shifting from neutral into gear and transferring power from the engine to the wheels. By taking action you "engage with the Universe" and enable the potential power of the engine to become realised and take physical form
- Your need to experience the value is the accelerator (gas) peddle. The power the engine creates is determined by how far you push the gas peddle. This is your passion.
The speed at which you move is determined by the power generated by your engine, which gear you are in, how far you push the gas peddle and how little you use the brakes. Going Beyond Beliefs, Beyond Values - Remembering Personal Truths Is it possible that experiencing your values is motivating because the value serves a higher purpose for you being here? Could it be true that: - Your need to fulfil your desire is your need to experience the value being served by the desire.
- Your need to experience the value is your need to experience a Personal Truth which is served by the value.
Experiencing a Personal Truth is a process of remembering what is true for you rather than learning something new. Personal Truths don't change throughout our lifetime only our awareness of them. Beliefs and values do change. Beliefs and values are mental constructs and are necessary aspects of our ego which is the primary tool we use to create and interpret our experience of the physical world. The problem with beliefs both positive and negative is they can cause mental "noise" which often manifests as internal dialogue. Imagine being at a rock concert (this might be a stretch!). There are 5,000 fans singing and shouting and you are there because you want to listen to the music. It makes no difference what the fans are singing or shouting you still won't hear the music. Personal Truths are the pieces of music or movements that make up the symphony of who you really are. To hear these pieces you need to quieten the fans (positive beliefs) and silence the critics (negative beliefs) long enough to recognise the music. Taking action in service of your desire is vitally important. By taking action you engage with the Universe and create the opportunity for the Universe to engage with you. Only you can create the opportunity for yourself and the Universe to sing together as one song or uni verse. The purpose of the Beyond Belief process is to create a safe environment for you to rehearse before singing live! To Summarise - When your beliefs both positive and negative about your desire are silenced you are open to discover what you truly value about your desire
- Your need to experience these values creates a flow of energy or passion
- Passion creates the motivation to take action in service of your desire
- By taking action you create the opportunity to experience these values and fulfil your desire
- By experiencing the values you realise and experience the Personal Truth being served by the values
Please give me feedback on the concepts outlined here and the Beyond Belief process which follows. Feel free to Email me at paul@mission-coach.co.uk Beyond Belief Process V1.7 Warning Depending on the individual going through the process (from hereon known as the "Explorer") some of these processes can lead to a temporary feeling of confusion or disorientation. Far from being a "bad" thing this could indicate a degree of internal re-alignment leading to positive change. Always follow the Guidelines for creating an "Earth Point" where the Explorer can return to at any time during the process. As a general rule do not drive or do anything else that may put yourself or other people at risk having been through a process, give yourself plenty of time to re-adjust. This rule applies to both Guide and Explorer. If for any reason you doubt you can safely complete a process do not attempt to do so. If you doubt your ability to safely act as Guide please do not do so. These processes are shared in the spirit of Self Leadership, please be sensible and take complete responsibility for your own actions.

- Beliefs about the Desire
Answer this question trusting completely what comes to you: What do I believe about my ability to fulfil my desire? This may be a "positive" or "negative" belief. Repeat the question until you have all the beliefs. Give the negative beliefs a voice and place them in the palm of one hand. Give the positive beliefs a voice and place them in the palm of the other hand. Start with your hands at shoulder width and keep the palms facing each other. Taking the time you need, bring your hands together allowing each voice to have its say. Put the hand with the most dominant beliefs higher than the other hand and allow them to see-saw as the dominance shifts from one hand to the other. Notice the silence is complete as your hands touch. You are now in a place of being open to know what is important to you about your desire. Step into the Values space bringing this openness with you.
- Values about the Desire
